Active and Eco Apparel/Gear Designer

Chandni Thawani is a Connecticut based designer, and founder of Chaandu. She draws inspiration from her Indian roots and her travel experiences, often using textiles she’s found in her grandmother’s collection or sourced from her own trips.

Her company Chaandu produces eco active apparel and gear, specializing in climbing chalk bags.

We love the way Chaandu combines form and function, blending together sustainably sourced up-cycled fabric into a sturdy and beautiful bag. We’re drawn to the stories each bag tells in its fabric story and those waiting to be told in its life of climbing.

From Chandni:

My aesthetic is very much influenced by my Indian heritage. Many of the fabrics and designs in my chalk bags and apparel are from India. Fabrics like Ikat, block prints, indigo dyed fabrics, elephant prints, saris of my grandmother’s personal collection and tailoring shop excess yardages.

In my collection, you will see eco fabric like organic cotton canvas, vintage fabrics and up-cycled fabrics like sari and upholstery. And each bag bought comes with a little note that tells you the fabric stories.

Fabric stories give the buyer the opportunity to know the origin and design or print story. It creates value and interest in the fabric and print. Many of the fabrics are found and collected during my travels to India or locally in the United States.
